Otter's Rock

So, school has started, and since I'm taking classes for grades this semester instead of pass/fail, my schoolwork is taking more time than it has in the past. (My seminary is not geared towards academics, it's geared towards people who want to be in parish ministry their whole careers, I'd say more people take their classes pass/fail than for grades. Not that I ever used the pass/fail thing as an excuse to slack off; but I wasn't obsessive, you know?) Anyway, my writing time is much curtailed.

I'm still excited about in_the_beginning but I'm definitely only going to be writing one of the two prompts I claimed. Moses and his identity issues will have to wait; Miriam and Deborah and the Word of God need to be finished ASAP so they can get sent off to beta.

sg_rarepairings is going to be run on a prompt-claim basis this year, which is both slightly disappointing and slightly relieving. I'm looking forward to it. And to the knowledge that I definitely won't be writing Sarah Gardner/Daniel Jackson this year, having written that two years running due to being assigned to the same person. But given its timing, it will be overlapping with yuletide, and both of course overlap with the end of the semester and the Christmas rush, and gah. It'll all work itself out, right? Right?

Meanwhile, I've got a Reboot Spock/Uhura piece dealing with some harsh Vulcan realities that's almost certainly going to have one of those completely open-ended 'endings' that I like because they're realistic and other people don't like because they don't give closure sitting on my harddrive. It needs a scene and a half, some tweaking, and a betaing, but between classes and my in_the_beginning fic, it's not going anywhere soon. (Okay, okay, I only like the open endings in my own fic, it drives me crazy in other peoples', and part of it is sheer laziness: I don't want to have to write the years of relationship and career exploration they're going to have on the Enterprise's mission that will have a huge effect on what choices the two of them make together and separately about where they're going and how they're going to live the rest of their lives taking into account Spock's biology and the pressure to repopulate the Vulcan species.)

So, if you're in the Stargate fandom you've probably heard about the massive amounts of fail (multiple different kinds, no less!) inherent in the casting sides for an episode of Stargate: Universe, and the defense from Gateworld, and all that. sheafrotherdon has an excellent rebuttal to Gateworld's defense of the fail, and cereta has an older post on living in a systematically misogynistic society and why don't "nice" men take a stand which then links to khalinche's post on the levels of harassment your average woman experiences on a daily basis, and why men don't really get it. And someone in the comments mentioned the Vagina Monologues, which I've never seen.

And I've been thinking. I love Stargate, but not the fail, and it seems like the fail has been growing over time, and the way they consistently play issues of rape and torture and such for titilation/humor or in other ways abuse white male privilege.

And lo, at 2 o'clock in the morning, an idea has formed for a story I will never write but which would be Made of Awesome if someone else would do it:

Teal'c is sensitive to power issues as they relate to the whole Jaffa/slave thing, but not so much (which is to say, not at all) as they relate to male/female relationships. He's very secure in his male privilege, and uses it, particularly with Jaffa women. He has great respect for Sam, treats her like an equal as a warrior, true, but look at how he treated the Jaffa women he was with. It's not that he's a bad guy, he just responds as his culture has taught him and doesn't really seem to think about the issue that much. And then in the episode Family Ties, Teal'c gets given tickets to The Vagina Monologues.

I want to know what Teal'c's reaction was. I want it to be done seriously, not played for laughs. I want to know how he related that to his experiences of Jaffa life and working with Sam for ten years. I want to explore Jaffa culture and Teal'c's perspective on it beyond the 'Jaffa revenge thing.' I want to see him talk about it with Sam, and with Ishta, and maybe his daughter-in-law Kar'yn. I don't want him to turn into an enlightened feminist Western male, but I do want him to understand.

Wrote about 2,500 words tonight. If you don't count the three long fics that were among my first fanfics ever and aren't very good and aren't much like most of the stuff I write, my average story is only about 1700 words long. So far, my gateverse_remix is at 11k+ words, with one more section left to write. And I have the feeling it's going to need extensive betaing to make sure all the thematic elements tie together. And I have ten days to finish it and get it betaed. Yaargh.

Everybody needs to go through the remix stories and leave lots of feedback--there are still some stories (including mine!) that don't have any, and the one that was written for me which is really cool only has my comment and it deserves more than that.

Anyway, here are the second half of my recs from remixredux08:

Not current events; others in the SGC were better for spying on. No, Adria watched her mother’s past. It amused her. Vala had been worshipped, had deceived her worshippers. If Vala had not chosen to become a goddess, no Goa’uld remained entirely free of the host’s influence. Once freed, Vala had used that worship on more than one occasion to her own profit.

Adria was just better at it.

The cinematography is beatiful, definitely a cut above what they had on the TV show. I also like the pacing better--there's time to feel what's going on before rushing off to the next crises. And the music is gorgeous. Though I wish they'd used more of the new stuff and less of the stuff from the movie--the movie music fit the Goa'uld perfectly, not so much the Ori. And the new music really does fit the Ori gorgeously.

All in all, well worth the $20 and the 2.5 hours.

And my assignment is both ironic and frustrating. The ironic I can't explain until after the reveal, but the frustrating I can talk about--she's a slasher. Almost exclusively. And I'm ... not. Not in the slightest. I'll read slash, if it's good enough and there's a purpose to it besides smut (I don't read het that's nothing but smut, either), but I don't write it. Thankfully, there are some that could easily be genified, where the slash is not key to the plot, but it's hardly ideal. Ah, well, it's better than I had with gateverse_remix last year. I was spoiled by remix_redux last year, that's my problem. We don't always get matched up with our favorite writers, alas.

Part of my problem is that I write in too many fandoms--you need to have written a minimum of five non-crossover, non-remix, non-remixed stories in a fandom with a minimum 500 words per story to sign up. I have several fandoms with two qualifying stories, but the only one with five is SG-1. So I'll be assigned to an SG-1 writer, for sure, which means it's fairly unlikely they're gonna choose to remix, say, one of my BSG stories or Batman stories. Since most of the stuff I've written lately is not SG-1, that makes me sad.

So I have Stargate on as I'm reading for class (I know, I know), and the episode currently on is "The Sentinel" from the end of season five. The scene where they're getting ready to leave for Latona has two really great lines: "I feel better just knowing there's an archaeologist watching our back," to which Daniel replies (holding up a knife) "Yeah, which end do the bullets go in again?"

I'd really love an icon of Daniel kicking ass with either of those as the caption.

Because I've been trying to get there since last night, and keep getting "Sorry, there are no results for “http://www.gateworld.net”. As of last night the Alpha Site was up, though with no details on what was going on, but now I'm getting Sorry, there are no results for “http://www.gateworldalphasite.com/”
